Check out this 20 minute presentation about supplement use in teen athletes.  We all strive to be better at what we do.  Teens are no different and the pressure can be even greater for them.  Here we talk about the dangers and some healthy alternatives.  This presentation can be provided to parents of children from all backgrounds.  Even parents need to be reminded that all things require balance, patience and a little hard work to achieve your goals.

In this case study assignment, we learned how to tailor physical activities to the individual needs and current levels.  Each person presented with a different goal, ability and resources.  We learned to meet the person where they were and help them to progress to meet their goals.  The principles used in this assignment were FITT (frequency, intensity, time and type) PROS (progress, regularity, overload, and specificity) to explain how the person would progress through the fitness program outlined.  Each principle was attributed to the major fitness criteria as a whole: cardiovascular, flexibility, and strength.  Addressing people as individuals and modifying the recommended activities will hopefully create a desire to continue with the program as it is seen as challenging but not overwhelming.

These are a few of my favorite websites which help to guide us on the journey to become great expressions of wellness.

yoga for movement, stretching and wellness

This is a great You Tube channel for all yoga practitioners.  There are many levels included in the demonstrations and types, ranging from morning yoga to practices addressing specific conditions like back pain.  I recommend this website to people to help them tone and stretch, breathe better and feel more energized and grounded.  The instructor has a wonderful way of bringing all styles and levels into consideration with a playful attitude.  You will often hear her say, "Do what feels right".

mindfulness your way to stress-less

The Wildmind website is a wealth of information on the subject of meditation.  One of the great things about this website are the online events offered through the center.  All that is asked of is a donation, which is tiered according to financial situation.  They give instruction on the various types of mediation and way to do meditations.  This is a fantastic practice to mitigate the negative effects of stress and stave off the aging process along the way.

so... what is CAM?

Complementary and alternative medicine have found their way into mainstream healthcare.  However, people (consumers) need to know where they can turn to get accurate, well studied and vetted information.  The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is a great website to begin exploration.  This website is vetted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and National Institutes of Health.  It not only provides information on the various natural health traditions but also articles on alternative ways to address health concerns.
